S106 Directors Blog

Avatar

A blog covering my experiences working as a director on S106 projects. And my work with the HPX300 and P+S Technik Mini35 combination. This is where I will post my day to day life, my experiences and other work related stuff. Erhm… I guess mostly work related stuff.

A 12 hour trip to Kigali, Rwanda

Yesterday we departed from Bukoba at 8:00 we knew it would be a long trip, from Bukoba, Tanzania to Kigali, Rwanda by car. We heard different travel time estimates, ranging from 5 hours to 12. Last night we pulled in at 8:30 pm so the latter was true… It was a journey with risks, we learned that the boarder region between Tanzania and Rwanda was not the safest. Armed bandits were common so we arranged for an armed escort. Two armed police officers would accompany us during our trip. The road was pretty good for African standards, we enjoyed what they call an “African massage” in our 4×4 van. Crossing the border post proofed to be easier than anticipated. This morning I woke up in a hotel in Kigali without a scratch, the first good night sleep in 3 days. This video shows a short excerpt of our trip.

Flying with a camera? No problem!

Our flight from Arusha to Mwanza left the airstrip this morning at 12:00. Boarding with my camera was very easy… “Just put it in the seat next to you!”

Arusha, Tanzania

We landed on the Arusha airstrip on wednesday, at 9:00 pm local time, a hot and damp night. The next day we drove to Same district to shoot the first episode of our documentary series in Africa. The subject was water irrigation and financial management. Same has a city bond with the Dutch city Tilburg, they have been helping to develop the region for the last 23 years.

EX1 Balance

I have recently bought a set of IDX endura elite batteries and a Zacuto plate for the v-mount. I added a weight of 1,3 kg in de back and all was balanced. So I basically had a proper handheld camera in terms of weight and balance. This helps a lot in weight displacement and on one of these batteries I can shoot two full days!

Letus Extreme and EX1 love

After a lot of waiting my Letus Extreme finally arrived. I basically read all I needed to know on dvxuser.com and learned a lot form Steve Callis and Phlip Bloom in watching their blogs and configuration. It is indeed a fine piece of machinery! With the EX1 specific achromat and the new Nikon mount the adapter sits perfectly aligned on the Zacuto bars. More updates as I get to put this beast to work! See some more shots in the gallery.

Blog is up!

After getting our entire site offline while playing with mysql databases my blog is finaly online! This is where I will post my day to day life, my experiences and work related stuff. Erhm… I guess mostly work related stuff.
