S106 Directors Blog

Avatar

A blog covering my experiences working as a director on S106 projects. And my work with the HPX300 and P+S Technik Mini35 combination. This is where I will post my day to day life, my experiences and other work related stuff. Erhm… I guess mostly work related stuff.

HPX300 and P+S Technik Mini35 Compact

It just didn’t work for me anymore. I tried balancing the EX1 rig with more and more Zacuto stuff. In the end it was all so heavy my back couldn’t take it anymore!

Looking back on my EX1 / Letus Extreme purchase, well it’s difficult. The EX1 produces a very good image and can very easily be mistaken / intercut with high end sony HD cams. But it’s just not a good handheld shooter. And let’s face it neither is the EX3. Price was the biggest reason I tried the Letus Extreme and I must admit that the image is very nice. But the build quality is just horrible. Not to mention the lack of product support.

Apartheid South Africa

I just wanted to share a short excerpt from my latest documentary. It’s a short interview about apartheid. Shot in an old church that provided cover for black people during this horrible period. Is was shot on a Sony EX1 in 720p HD, the video is HD flash so please be patient and do click the fullscreen button!

Alle Mannen Willen Hetzelfde

My 35mm setup has been used in the 48hrs project. I would have loved to be there but there was no time, however I do want you to see the outcome! A very nice short that shows the quality of the camera and the crew. It’s in Dutch but worth a look for you international people.

I Forget Your Name

After two weeks of editing and proofing I can finally show you an excerpt of the 2 hour live show I directed for the Dutch band DI-RECT. The concert dvd was produced by Double 2 one of my regular clients, a great company that has one of the biggest music production track records in the Netherlands. The band is under management at EMI Music. The show was shot on 5 cameras with two tracks and a jib. Using a multicam ob van. In total the crew contained about 40 people and it worked out great! Take a look at the gallery for some shots. The clip above is also the current single release and is now airing on MTV. Tell me what you think!

Vodafone and Madonna

Most of the time we wish we could work on 2k material and sometimes we have to scale down… a lot… for Video MMS. Only 172 x 144 pixels with a maximum filesize of 220kb.

One of our regular clients is Chunk ID based in Amsterdam. We have done many video MMS campaigns for them over the years. Always strictly Vodafone and this one was special. Madonna & Vodafone have teamed up to release the first seven songs on her new album Hard Candy via Vodafone Live!

Doe de Stofzuiger

This is a music video I shot for De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig. A dutch group, it’s about 2 years ago now and while cleaning out our server we came across this clip. Just thought I’d share it with you. It was shot very low budget on a Sony PD-170 with a mini 35 adapter.

Beautiful Decay

Just did some more test shooting with the Letus Extreme. I cleaned the entire adapter and checked everything via the SDI output on a HD broadcast monitor just to be safe. Shooting with the adapter is harder then I thought, there is a lot to take into account. If you close the aperture on the front lens too much you see the ground glass and if you use an ND your focus changes etc. On my last shots during the day I later found out that some dust had settled on the ground glass. I didn’t see this on the camera lcd so I am thinking of buying a ref portable, probably a Nebtek. Should it be an SDI or component monitor? Oh, and tell me how you like the footage.

Paper on 35mm primes

I am completely in love with the look of these prime lenses! And the workflow is so much better then shooting on film. And with the grain from the ground glass and good lighting you can still achieve amazing results. This is one of my more recent scenes shot with an adapter. What do you think?

First Test Footage

Just shot some test footage at our studio, don’t mind the steadiness, camera is still a bit front heavy… Focus is great with the new follow focus and the color depth of the EX1 amazes me for I usually have mixed results with XDCAM material.

S106 Showreel
